  • Capturing HDV to Pro Res crashes FCP after 5min?

Posted by Richard Pengelly on August 30, 2010 at 4:25 am

I just started working on a cruise ship and the last guy had FCP setup like this. We have been asked by head office to use Pro Res.

    OSX version 10.5.8
    2×3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

    FCP Studio 3
    FCP Version 7.0.2

    Capturing HDV Footage using

    Sequence Preset: Apple Prores 422 1920×1080 30p 48kHz
Capture Preset: HDV-Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Device Control: Sony HDV Firewire

When capturing the Video is lags and is delayed by over 15 seconds. Also it stutters quite a bit. Is this normal for Apple ProRes?
Final Cut Pro Crashes when capturing over 5 mins of video using these settings.

I am used to editing with my full tape capture as one file. Is it possible to capture this way with Pro Res? I suppose I could merge the clips or Make Master Clip?

Any help or advice on how I should be capturing HDV would be greatly appreciated.

You have not stated what your storage is. Internal? external RAID?

It could be that your disks do not support the rate of ProRes HQ.
