capturing from my Canon HV20
Posted by Adrian Tapia on June 5, 2007 at 9:35 pmI’m trying out one of these prosumer Canon HV20’s, which shoots in standard HD, HD24fps (film mode), as well as standard DV. Ever since I’ve had this camera, my computer (4×2.5GHz G5, 2GB RAM running OSX 10.4.9 with latest version of Quicktime) has refused to recognize it. I’ve since purchased FCP Studio 2, thinking a clean install would do the trick, but to no avail. The computer just refuses to recognize only this camera. Any suggestions?

June 6, 2007 at 3:16 amDoes the camera work with iMovie? If so you don’t have a cable or FW port problem… check it out and post back.

June 6, 2007 at 9:01 amBeing that I just purchased and hv20 today, and I’m totally new to any variant of hi-def, I too was having trouble getting FCP to capture. I tried iMovie, and capture worked fine. So, I went back to FCP and checked out my Audio/Video settings, and discovered they were off. It was trying to do DVCPROHD60. I set sequence preset to HDV-1080i60, capture preset to HDV, and device control preset to HDV firewire basic. I tried to capture again, and was greeted with a different looking Log and Capture interface; similar to the one I see when capturing dv, but different. Everything then captured beautifully, and I was able to lay it on the timeline with no rendering required.
Hope this helps-

June 7, 2007 at 7:46 pmI’ve tried all that, and the computer still doesn’t recognize my camera. At this point I’m almost certain that the firewire port is kaput. Thanks for the help.

June 13, 2007 at 7:22 pmI own an HV20 and I use FCP 5.1 with a Mac Pro. I can’t capture 1080i24p with FCP. I haven’t tried capturing 30-frame HDV, but it probably works. Mostly, I shoot with the 24p option turned on. There is an “easy setup” in FCP 5.1 called 1080p24. This is not the same! It still requires a long render, and I am not willing to sit through it.
Does the new Final Cut Studio 6/FCP 2 have a 1080i24p easy setup? If so, I’ll buy the upgrade. But, I need to be sure.
Thanks!

July 4, 2010 at 2:48 amHi guys,
I’m still having trouble getting my computer to recognize the HV20. It used to capture just fine on my old MacBook Pro, but now that I bought the newest MacBook Pro model I’m having all sorts of problems. It doesn’t have a FW400 port to use with the original cable, so I bought a FW800 to HDV/DV cable. I still can’t get the camera to be recognized in FCP or iMovie. Does anyone know what adjustments need to be made in order to get my camera to work with the new Macs??
Thanks!
