Capturing from DV to Quictime DV?
Posted by Deinon on June 28, 2006 at 8:57 amHello. I work with Final Cut, but i’ve got a PC and I’d like to use it to capture DV video by firewire but I need them to be in MOV format. Is it possible, with Premiere, to capture in quicktime DV?
Thanks you very much for your help

June 28, 2006 at 1:47 pmYou are looking for trouble. There is no way that I know of to capture on a PC in MOV format to use on a Mac. There is probably a program that will make the conversion, but I don’t personally know of any.
I know it is tough to accept, but there is a difference between the way a Mac works and the way a PC works. Yet, the material on the tape is identical. So you would think it would be simple, wouldn’t you?

June 28, 2006 at 2:02 pmI have taken DV-MOV files and rendered them to DV-AVI in the PC, perhaps you can go the other way. But it would take longer to render the new files than if you just digitized directly into the Mac.
What happens if you import a DV-AVI file into FCP?

June 28, 2006 at 5:42 pmYes, I could convert an Avi to a Mov with something like Canopus Procoder, but it’s not a good idea if you want to save time.
I’ll try importing an AVI into Final Cut.
Thanks

June 29, 2006 at 7:23 pmI tried importing QT into PPro, and there is a compression hit as well as a gamma shift (seen in After Effects difference mode). But it would be interesting to see if QT Pro could import the DV AVI and not require recompression.
You could do a Save As out of QT Pro and save an alias. I’d try it but I don’t have nor do I want keep upgrading QT Pro.
