Capturing footage
I brought a PowerBook G4 laptop have installed final cut pro 5.1. my problem is when I go to digitize footage, the video, sound and time code all come through, I then click the capture now button and the capture screen appears however when I press escape final cut shuts down and sends an error message saying ‘the application final cut pro quit unexpectedly after it was reopened.’ I have tried used a HVR-M25E SONY deck and a PD150P SONY camera. Do you have an external hard drive connected to your laptop for media capture, or are you trying to capture your footage to your startup drive?
Have you tried a batch capture using in and out points instead of using the “Capture Now” command?– Don

I would check a couple of things. First, do you have enough RAM in the Powerbook? 1 Gb is recommended, although I run 5.0.3 on a G4 PB with 768mb.
Secondly, try trashing all the FCP preferences. Apple help will tell you how.
Thirdly, I would do a clean reinstall of your system, first OS X, then FCP. Whilst this could be a settings issue in FCP, it doesn’t sound like it to me. The reinstall will also make sure all of your system components are up to date. Before you install FCP do a software update. Then do another one after you install. See how you go.
