  • Capturing Dvc-pro HD 25p over fw400?

Posted by Alex Bluffield on September 6, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Hi this is really pushing the boat out – we want to capture dvc-pro hd 1080 25p footage from the AJ1400 deck using the fw400 output. Capturing to a fw800 drive & Intel Imac which is not ideal. I’d expect dropped frames using this setup esp as deck & drive will be connected on same fw bus. As far as I know the deck only has a fw400 connection – which I assume is intended for DV capture rather than dvcpro HD capture. The deck can downconvert which might be a better option. If we downconvert to dvcpro 50/Pro Res 422 and do an offline edit with that sequence setting and then create an offline version of the project, can we use the EDL to recapture at full res for online on an AJA kona equipped system? Is capturing thru HD-SDI equipped video card the only option for dvcpro-HD? Thanks in advance, Alex.

YOu can capture 1080 via firewire. Thing is you need TWO separate firewire buses. All Macs have only one built in…despite having multiple ports. YOu will need an adapter to get another port.

ProRes isn’t an offline codec. IN fact, it has a higher data rate than DVCPRO HD. If you offline, I’d suggest the DV codec. And no, a capture card is not needed to capturing DVCPRO HD. Firewire capture works fine. But you need to have a proper setup to do it right.

Thanks for the reply Shane. We want to capture progressive DVCPRO-HD (PAL) – this is just not going to be possible on an Intel Imac is it – as they have no expansion options for adding an extra fw bus. Can we do it on a Mac Pro with an extra fw bus? The deck only has fw400 – can we capture using dvcpro hd 1080 25p codec without video overrun/sync issues? Thanks in advance. Alex.

Also – would adding an e-SATA card & drive be another alternative? (Again this wouldn’t be poss with the Imac).

[Alex Bluffield] “this is just not going to be possible on an Intel Imac is it – as they have no expansion options for adding an extra fw bus.”

Correct. The iMac cannot be used as a capture machine. Fine as an editing machine for this, but not capture nor output.

[Alex Bluffield] “Can we do it on a Mac Pro with an extra fw bus?”

Yes. That, or a MacBook Pro…that has an Express 34 slot for expansion.

[Alex Bluffield] “The deck only has fw400 – can we capture using dvcpro hd 1080 25p codec without video overrun/sync issues?”

No…there are sync issues. Audio leads video by 2-7 frames when you capture via firewire. Only capturing with an HD capture card via HD SDI captures the footage in perfect sync. In my experience.

Thanks Shane. We have a Lacie D2 external drive – that has both e-SATA & FW connections. Should we go FW or e-SATA (now thinking of capturing using MacBook Pro)? Thanks for your time. ALex

Hi Shane – sorry one more question – if we did go with an Imac can we try capturing to the internal SATA drive if we create a partition? Then keep copying across the media to external disk as the storage fills up?
    Cheers, Alex.

You will not be able to capture to the internal drive. It’s not a matter of putting it on a different partition, it’s about separate physical drives. Doing this will drop frames.

Yes, capturing to an eSATA drive through the ExpressCard34 slot in the MBP would work.
