Capturing Audio Separate From Video
I’m not sure if this has been discussed somewhere on these forums. Here’s my scenario:
I’m filming a speaking event along with live music this week, 3 or 4 cameras. I’ll be using a wireless lapel on the speaker captured to one of the cameras. They will also have a sound system that I can take a main mix out of the board to capture and mix with audio from the cameras to get a better ‘live’ sound. Depending on where the board is, etc, I’m not sure if I’ll be going from the board to a camera, or if I’ll go from the board through a Firebox into my computer (Garageband works great for basic audio capturing like this).
This is where my question comes in: If I use a Firebox and capture to my computer, then kick out an aiff to Final Cut, will there be any problem synching the audio with the other audio/video sources that I’ll capture from tape in FCP?

If it were me, I’dcapture to a camera. That way you know you’ll be in sync. If it’s easier to use the Firebox, run a test. Set up a camera and shoot your TV for however long the event will be. Get sound to the cam thru its mic and also record the sound thru your Firebox to your computer. Then lay the files against each other and see if they’re in sync at the end. If they are you should be good to go. Please report back on your results.

Thanks for the insight John. I am hoping to capture audio to camera from the mixer. I’m preparing to capture through the firebox to my computer, because the venue is unfamiliar and I’m not sure where the mixer will be located in relation to cameras (They’ve got portable in-house sound, and I’m bringing equipment for video). I recently helped shoot a live concert and they mixed the audio from the cameras with audio captured through a firepod, so it seems like it wouldn’t be a problem… there are just some things I’m not sure how to prepare for in a live situation 🙂 Again, thanks for the insight, and I will report back after the shoot tomorrow with what happens, etc.
