  • Capturing at 25fps/30fps and 37fps (panasonic DVCPro varycam)

    Hi

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with a complicated digitising situation:

-HD footage filmed on panasonic varycam DVCPRO tapes.
-Will be hiring a AJHD1400 deck to capture.
-Will be capturing through a HD SDI cable into a blakmagic card.
-Will have 3 types of footage. Filmed at 25fps, 30fps and 37fps.
-Will not be downconverting but will be capturiong as HD.
-I have already been told the 37fps will need to go to a frame converter standardizer to be captured as the AJHD1400 deck cannot playback at that frame rate.

To capture the 25 and 30 fps myself:

-What setup do I use in fcp for 1.sequence preset 2.capture preset and 3. A/V Devices?
-How do I tell fcp what the frame rate is?
-Anything else I should know about capturing different frame rates or any decklink settings I need to be aware of?

Also, once I get the 37fps footage back from the frame converter standardizer, how do I import that into FCP (what settings etc.)

Many thanks to anyone who replies,

    Ceri

    It’s Varicam by the way.

And it’s important to understand that no matter what frame rate you select with a Varicam, the tape is always being recorded as 59.94 and the camera is adding the appropriate pulldown. This is actually a good thing because it makes less madness when working with odd frame rates like 37fps with other more standard frame rates.

You can capture all of this stuff as 59.94 and you will simply see a difference in the look when you hit your footage that is shot at a different frame rate.

Or you can do a pulldown removal so that you can work in a timeline like 25fps – and make everything conform to that.

You should ask yourself some questions on how you intend to work with the footage (is the majority of the footage in one frame rate, what was the purpose of the other frame rates, what’s your intended output, etc) before you start capturing.

The variable frame rates (30/37) are to get a slow motion effect that looks decent quality (but there isn’t enough budget to use film). Therefore most of the footage will be at standard 25 fps.

The footage will all be edited on a DVCPRo HD 108050i sequence set to 25fps. The compressor is DVCPro HD 720p50.

As it is for a music video I need to capture it so that it remains in synch with the audio.

Do I need to conform the 30/37 to 25fps to use it on a 25fps timeline, will this allow the slow mo to be created?
Also how do I set final cut up to do this?

Thanks very much for your help with this, i have been warned by people that varicam can cause loads of problems!
