I’m trying to capture a series of 8MM Tapes through an old Video8 Sony Handycam. The problem is that there is no capture card on the computer I’m using, so I’m doing composite out to an old DVCPRO deck, then going firewire into the machine. I’m capturing with FCP 6.

The problem is that I don’t see anything coming up in my capture window. The video plays out to the monitor just fine, but I can’t bring it into FCP. I’ve played around with the capture settings, but can’t seem to get anything to show up. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Check the switchology again; you likely have something set for composite video that needs to be DV.

“Switchology”? I tried capturing from a DVCPRO tape and it works just fine. It just seems to be with the passthru of the 8MM tape. Specifically from the deck to FCP because the deck is reading the footage just fine.

I’m not sure you get a conversion out of that signal path you have, unless you’re actually recording on the DVC pro deck. Or am I misunderstanding?

I tried to do this years ago, but the signal path doesn’t really work like that.

You can always get an analog to firewire converter on ebay. Sony made one.

Or, dump your stuff to DVCPRO and then capture it.

OK, at least I’m not crazy. I’ll probably just dub to DVCPRO and then bring it into the system. Thanks for you help everybody! I really appreciate it.
