This is a new one for me. I’m trying to capture DV. Done it successfully thousands of times. Drives (eSata RAID) will do HD… but nothing will capture this DV. Plays (captures) for exactly 16 seconds then image freezes in FCP. The deck keeps playing showing image on front panel (Sony HDV deck) Tape has no drop outs, but the only consistent thing is that capture freezes after 16 seconds. The System Settings aren’t set to limit capture and I’ve rebooted. Doesn’t matter what drive I try to capture to, still 16 seconds and freeze.

Like I said. I’ve done this thousands of times. Just starting happening. Guess I could trash pref. and reset everything… but this is weird.

Run a system update recently? Say new Quicktime or FCP update?

Nope. Same QT same FCP. Added some additional RAM (went from 2gig to 4gig)

It’s this 16 second thing that’s weird. And it doesn’t matter what drive I use as scratch disc.

I trashed preferences, but still 16 seconds and freeze no matter where I am in the tape. If I pause the tape, capture will keep going and eventually start capturing again. It is like it captures for 16 seconds/freezes for 16 seconds/starts capture again/ ad nauseum.

It will do a complete hour tape just in 16 motion/freeze segements. This is weird.

Even plugged in a new (diffent dv deck) and it is exactly the same… 16 seconds then freeze frame for 16 seconds then motion….

Just to test…because I am this way…take the RAM out and then see. If it worked, then it didn’t…look at what is different. RAM is different…take it out.

Doing that as I write this…I mean not at the same but…

I’ve got a G5 Dual 2.0 that is real strange about memory. Only likes REAL $800 Apple memory… even tho the 2 gig I put in has the same Samsung serial number, I think there’s something APPLE does to RAM… like get it blessed by the Pope or something…

Pulled the extra 2 gigs of memory same exact thing 16 seconds then the big freeze.

Different tape… different tape machine, all drives on firewire off.

Reporting dropped frames, but I assume thats because of the freeze.

Doesn’t matter if I put the deck in “local” and try to capture without DV control (uncontrolled device).

    It’s got me vexed.

My HDV experience is little, and with that deck…nil. But, is it a DV tape in that deck? or an HDV tape? Does it need to be set to something to play out DV properly?

What about your Easy Setups…are you using a DV one? The PROPER DV one?

I dropped all the external drives, firewire, USB, eSata. Finally got it to capture to internal B drive (sata). So it seems to be something colliding in the firewire setup.

To answer you question… it’s a DV tape. Not HDV. So it wasn’t a ingest problem. So at least I got it to capture. Now, I slowly put drives back up until I get capture failure and freezes.

Thank you for making me systematically go thru things. Sometimes it just takes someone with a cool head to step you thru stuff…

    Thank you!!!

Are your external HDs striped with HFS+? Freezing clips sounds like a drives issue.

It didn’t matter what drive I captured to. I think it’s a firewire issue. The capture decks use firewire and at least one of the drives I was trying to capture to is firewire 800.

Anyway, I removed all external drives and it would capture. Put the external drives back and it’s working again. Flakey huh?

I think it was a firewire issue though. I’ve got some HD stuff coming in, it will be interesting to see how that captures. This isn’t the first HD project so I’ll be able to compare how system is functioning.

Thanks for everyone’s help! It is great to know that there are people who care and will respond.
