Capturing 4 Ch Audio from XL-H1 using FW?
Hello,
I was wondering if anybody had come up with a way to capture all 4 channels of audio from an XL-H1 using FW.
My understanding is that you can’t capture 4 channels at once over FW, but is it possible to capture the tape getting channels 1 and 2, then capture the tape again getting channels 3 and 4. In the XL-H1 AUDIO SETUP menu it doesn’t look like it has this option.
So, is there a way to make this happen, or am I going to have to either buy an HDV deck or an HD/SDI card for my tower?

You don’t need to change anything with the XL-H1, only with FCP. I capture 4 channel audio recorded by an XL2 all the time and I don’t even use the XL2 to do the capture, but a cheap Sony MiniDV palmcorder.
Go to Audio/Video settings in the Final Cut Pro Menu. Click the capture presets tab, highlight the one you usually use, duplicate it then click on “edit”. In the capture preset editor window rename the preset and make sure you have something like “32K” audio instead of “48K” so you can keep track of it. In the Quicktime Audio settings you can choose “first 2 channels” and “second 2 channels”. Leave it as first 2 channels for now. Change the Format to 32 Khz 16bit 2 channels. Click OK to close the Capture Preset Editor window and click on the A/V Devices tab. Click the Options tab to the right of the Audio drop down menu. Change the settings from 48Khz to 32 Khz, 16 bit to 12 bit and 2 channels to 4 channels.
Make your first video/audio capture to get the first 2 channels. Rewind the tape and open up the Capture Preset Editor window again. Change the audio to second 2 channels and do another pass, this time disabling the video capture in the log and capture window so you only capture the audio this time.
NOTE: if you’re monitoring your audio with firewire only you’ll still hear just the first 2 channels in your speakers even though you’re capturing the second 2 channels. Rest assured that when you’re done the 2nd pass you’ll have your audio from channels 3 and 4.

The FCP settings were locked. So ended up using the Decklink Pro Extreme card, and exporting from the XL-H1 via YUV and the XLRs, I even had a an SD version, and was going to take tracks 3 and 4 off that. But this was a close shot lecture, and lipsync errors would have certainly been a serious editing issue, over 45 mins. Too much hastle. Why this camera cant export into FCP without so much hastle is beyond me.
Still cant understand why the XL-H1’s SDI output is mute, an entirely useless feature. No audio from a Camcorder, with 4 audio tracks, by design!
