  • Capturing 1080p/25 Using Decklink HD Pro PCIe Card

I’m in the process of capturing the full resolution HD footage for my project’s online sfx and final output work. This is a feature film project that will end up on film for theatrical release and also on DVD, TV, etc. for ancillary markets. The system used is as follows:

    Production:
    – Camera: Sony HDW F-900 HDCAM CineAlta
    – Tapes: Sony BCT-40HD
    – Shooting format: 1920×1080 25p

    Post-Production:
    – Workstation: Mac Pro 1 (Dual-Core Intel Xeon 3GHz processors –16GB RAM – NVIDIA Quadro FX4500 graphics card – MAC OS X Tiger10.4.10 operating system)
    – RAID Storage: G-TECH GSPEEDXL12 Dual Host 4Gb FC with ATTO Celerity FC-42ES host adapter card
    – External monitor: JVC DT-V24L1D broadcast LCD monitor
    – Software: Fincal Cut Studio 2, Shake 4, Studio Artist 3, Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Production Premium.
    – Capture card: Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro PCIe
    – Capture VTR: Sony HDW-M2000

Blackmagic Deck Control utility software was used to capture the above footage in the above system, using the following settings:

    Easy Setup settings:
    – Blackmagic HDTV 1080i50 -8bit (there is no Easy Setup for 1080p 25Hz)

    Serial Device settings:
    – Serial Port: RS422 Deck Control
    – Frame Rate: 25

    Capture Settings:
    – Video Input: Blackmagic HDTV 1080
    – Source: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 25Hz

    Advanced settings:
    – Compression Type: Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
    – Motion Frames Per Second: Best

I have a question regarding all the above:

    Question:

Is my original 1080p/25 footage now converted into 1080i50 because of the above capture process?

If the answer is “yes, the footage is now interlaced”, then is there a way to re-capture my original footage as it is (i.e. progressive rather than interlaced) using the Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro capture card?

My preference for my FX workflow is to start with progressive (rather than Interlaced) footage and any help to achieve that would be much appreciated. If Blackmagic won’t give me what I need, any recommendation for another capture card would be also appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ayman

hi Ayman, i wonder if you have any answer about this…
i’ve been thinking about buying a Multibridge PRO for ingesting and mastering HD at 25p.

Our setup is very similar to yours… but is under construction

OCTO CORE 2.8 / 4 GB RAM / GEforce 8800 / CALDIGIT HD PRO (coming soon) we didnt choose the VIDEO HARDWARE INTERFACE.

we want to work with HDcam SR footage DUAL LINK 444. here in argentina are several 25p or sometimes 24p. (when cinema)
and we work also with 2k CINEFORM RAW coming from SI2k but i dont know nothing about future support from BM OUTPUTS.

every information about this kind of workflows is welcome since we do not take our final decision about the equipment.

    thanks in advance

    Hi Ayman,

No, your footage is not converted to interlace. The camera actually shoots progressive segmented frames so the 1080i50 setups are correct. Make sure you go into the sequence settings and set the field order option to “NONE”.
