capture xdcam on externalHD
Posted by Jurriaan Van der kamp on November 15, 2009 at 9:17 pmHi,
I am thinking about purchasing a new unibody mbp but Apple the dropped the fw400. Now with mij MBP 2.2gHz i capture the sony530xdcam via fw400 and i use my OWC’on the go” externalHD on the fw800 port.Is there a way to work in the same manner with the new “400less”MBP.I mean with the same speed and relieabillity?
PS preferably without spending hundreds of dollars.Andrew Kimery replied 16 years, 6 months ago 3 Members · 5 Replies -

November 15, 2009 at 10:23 pmIf it’s one with an ExpressCard there are FW adaptor cards for that slot. That would avoid reported issues when connecting a camera and drive to the same FW port.

November 15, 2009 at 10:48 pmI checked up on the ExpressCards but i stumbeled on a lot mails of people having problems with them.i think the are quite expensive as well (thanx Apple for taking away the fw400). Do you know of a card that works flawlesly and supports hd imx and hdv? on a recent MBP?

November 15, 2009 at 11:02 pmSorry, I have no recommendation for a FW card. I only use a Duel Adaptor (which is an ExpressCard) to transfer P2 card contents in the field. It has worked flawlessly for over two years.

November 16, 2009 at 1:53 amYou could look into buying a FW hub.
All Apple computers only have a single FW bus (even if they have multiple FW ports) and the bus only runs as fast as the slowest device. So you have a FW800 device plugged in and a FW400 device you the single bus will be shared by both devices and run at FW400 speeds.
