Is it possible to capture video…either HDV or DV…directly to the computer via the firewire port (pass thru) on the Z7U camera? I did this with my VX2100 when capturing old 8mm home movie film using the capture utility in Vegas. I have gotten the computer to recognize the camera when I turn it on (Device found Sony HVR-Z7U)…but then a dialog box opens up and says

The device Sony HVR-Z7U could not be opened.
Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user.

I have nothing else running on the computer, just Vegas and the Vegas capture app.

I have ‘Enable DV device control’ unchecked as I always did with my VX2100 since I’m not using a tape (or MRC)…just trying to get video pass thru.

Thanks a bunch for any ideas or suggestions I might try…if this is even possible with the Z7U. If not…I guess I’ll have to use my VX2100…although I’d really like to try the Z7U for capturing if I can.

Do you have the Sony HVR-Z7U set to DV downconvert mode? If you’re trying to capture DV it must be in DV mode not HDV mode.

Thanks for the reply John. Actually I’d like to capture in HDV if possible just because of the resolution. But I’ve never captured pass thru with the Z7U and didn’t know if it was even possible with these cameras. Is the capture utility able to capture a pass thru HD signal?…and if so, does it capture the same file type it records onto the MRC?

I suppose I could just record the signal to a CF card with the MRC…but I could save some time and extra steps if I can just capture a pass thru signal directly to the PC.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

My Sony HVR-Z1U specs say that it has “Analog/Digital Conversion with Pass-Through” but I’ve never tried it. I’m not sure if the Z7U has this. I just looked and I didn’t see it in the specs.

Thanks again for the info John. I looked thru my manual and didn’t see anything referring to pass thru either. I guess I do still have a use for my VX2100. It captures a good picture via pass thru but I was hoping for the better resolution with the Z7U. I suppose Sony figured we didn’t need that feature on our cameras anymore 🙂 .

Makes me curious now about your Z1U with analog/digital conversion pass thru. I wonder if that’s only a signal coming into the A/V jacks to the camera, or if it will actually pass thru the live video feed from the camera to the firewire as the VX2100 does….interesting.
