Capture Sync Issue
Hi,
I’ve been a FCP user for many years, and I’m very frustrated with my current issue. My ultimate goal is to transfer 16 full length VHS tapes to DVD. I’ve transfered all of the VHS tapes to mini-dv. I now want to capture them in FCP, export them, and burn them onto DVDs.
Problem: When capturing the full dv tapes, the audio is drifting out of sync. It starts off perfect, and by the end of a 45 min tape, the audio is a good 2 seconds off.
I’ve read that the audio sample rates are usually to blame. However, I don’t see a way in FCP 6.0.4 to change that rate. It’s always at 48khz.
I originally transfered the VHS to mini-dv using an old VCR (with only 1 audio port), to a Sony DSR-11 deck. I’ve tried capturing to 3 different drives, and each one produces the same result. The mini dv tapes play fine when played on a monitor.
I appreciate any help you can provide. Please let me know what info I can provide to make troubleshooting easier.

Your DSR probably recorded the tapes at 41k. Dunno. If the DSR tape is in sync, your fault lies in your capture settings. did you use miniDV or DVCAM? MiniDV is likely to drift. Easier and cheaper to buy a DVD-VHS recorder, maybe $250 these days. You put the VHS in the deck, a blank DVD in the slot and push the dub button. By the time you have tried and failed to fix your captures, transcoded to MEPGE2 once or twice before getting that to work and then deciding to just let DVDSP do the transcode, burned and failed a few DVDs, and then been disappointed with the pixelated results, you’ll be far ahead to just go to Costco or Walmart and buy a DVD recorder.
Unlink the audio from the video.
Trim the audio will it matches the outpoint of the video, it’s either going to be longer or shorter. Note the exact length of the video clip.
Use speed adjust to change the length of the audio clip to exactly the length of the video clip. Render. . Relink. Test, redo if necessary.Pain in the butt, go buy the recorder.

I think he means 32k (thats the other common setting for DV decks)
I have had that problem with a load of DV tapes recorded at 32k audio.
It’s a real shame FCP can’t just work with it as is like every other NLE, but oh well.My workaround is to pass it through a canopus 110 A/D converter.
It converts it on the fly from 32k to 48k. -
Why not just use a cheap DVD recorder?

The whole goal was to add chapter markers to the home videos, so that certain scenes could be accessed easily.
If the mini-dv tapes are all synced properly, isn’t there a setting in FCP that allows me to capture at 32k?

Most of the DVD recorders allow chapter construction. It’s a remarkably difficult task.
You might have mentioned that in the original post as that is a completely different task than simply converting your irreplaceable family videotape collection to DVDs.bogiesan

i have looked everywhere and not seen that.
