capture probs from Canon HDV XH A1 shot as DV
I am using a Canon HDV XH A1 camera, that has the option to shoot DV. The video on the DV tape looks fine, when I open it throught the log and capture window, it seemingly looks fine. But as soon and I hit capture and subsequently drag the clip into the timeline, all distinct color edges look jagged (ie. Desk edge, collar of shirt, etc). Does this have something to do with compression or conversion? Please advise!

No…that has to do with two things. DV is highly compressed. Edges and lines are jagged and stepped.

Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
The canvas shows you what happens after the codec you are working with has been applied. The viewer shows you the material in its native format. There are a couple things you can do to make it look better:
1. Disable overlays on the canvas
2. Make sure you’ve rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timelineBut still, your computer monitor will not show you a full quality image. For that you need an external monitor and a proper output device, such as those made by Canopus (ADVC 110, 300

I use my XH A1 to bring DV clips into FCP without any problems at all. No jaggies, No lines. The DV clips were shot on another DV camcorder – I just drop the DV tape into the XH A1 and capture from there since it’s usually connected to the mac.
FCP won’t let me capture using a SD preset and HD device control, (it requires all HD or all SD settings) – so I tell it to capture uncompressed and then manually control the capture & camcorder.

Hi Valerie, I have the exact same problem! Did you find anything that works? I’ve tried everything. It’s jagged in FCP (ver 5.0.4). A friend told me to import it using iMovie 6 so I did and it looks perfect(!!) but when I export it from there to use in FCP, it’s till jagged!
I would LOVE any advice. Thanks in advance.
