Lots of info. on the COW about dropped frames on capture etc. I’m having such problems with FCP 6.06 on an older Mac Book Pro. I do have a fast drive on firewire set in RAID 1 (not its fastest config.) I’m trying to use Capture Now to get short clips off 3/4″ and Betacam SP decks. Have tried both through a camera and through an MX02 mini. If I uncheck “abort capture on dropped frames” I get the video but out of synch audio. If I check it I never get far into a clip before the abortion. So it seems to me the solution is in the speed of my computer and/or external HD. So here’s my question, has a consensus evolved on just what version of Mac Book Pro, and what kind/speed/array of external dirve(s)would one need to do seamless captures of SD video off uncontrolled decks? Appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

I used to do it all the time in my Powermac G5. What are your capture settings?

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the MX0@ Mini only supports two capture settings for an uprez: 720p @ 59.94 and 10801 @ 59.94. According to Matrox, both of these are overwhelming my Mac Book Pro and WD Studio Book (set at Raid 1) and therefore dropping frames. I can get a clip in at 480i then render and render and render in FCP as the project evolves. The point is I’d like to be able to do the uprez with the I/O box as its captured. So, wonder just what system and external HD one would need for that??? One would think this is quantifiable and the answer would point towards hardware that could do the job, but it’s beyond my depth to make that calculation. Is anyone able to uprez through a Matrox or Kona without a huge ‘puter and massive/expensive array? What lap top version, which external HD will do the trick?
