Capture Problems FCP

I’ve been having intermittent capture problems for a while with FCP. I’m trying to capture HDV NTSC footage down converted through a Z1 but I keep coming up against a series of problems, sometimes I get the warning ‘unable to initialize deck’ then if I get a preview it stops capture with ‘dropped frames warning, or says ‘unable to capture no video present’ the preview is disabled, but it says VTR ok, I can hear the audio and sometimes it will show video if I cahnge to ‘non controllable device’ I can also capture using imovie, so I dont think there is a problem with the FireWire. I cant get my head around the problem. I have trashed prefs and tried re-installing quicktime but nothing is working. Any suggestions would be amazing I’m very stuck with this problem and need to resolve it urgently.

Sri- You haven’t given a lot of information on your system but because your issue is ‘urgent’ I’ll give you a list of things I would try that may help to get you going.
You may have a firewire conflict. Are you using a firewire scratch drive? Are your Z-1 and your scratch drive on the same firewire bus? You may need a second firewire bus via inexpensive PCI card.
Is your system drive also set as your scratch drive? Definite no-no.
Is your Z-1 iLink downconversion menu item set to ON?
Is your FCP Easy Setup an EXACT match of your iLink down converted signal?

Thanks for your swift response, I have managed to capture the footage using the non controllable device settings, but I would still like to try and resolve the issue for the future.
I don’t think it has anything to do with down converting as I have tried to capture DV footage with the same problems.
In answer to your questions; I not too sure if the Z1 and scratch drives are on the same bus. I’m editing on a G5 2 X 2.66 GHz Dual-Core 3GB RAM using an external drive for all the project files and scratch disks, with the camera plugged into a different fire wire connection.
My scratch drive is the external drive so not the system drive.
the Z-1 iLink down conversion menu item is set to ON
and FCP Easy Setup is an EXACT match of iLink down converted signal
Sorry about lack of technical knowledge but I’m looking into the idea of a fire wire conflict, is there anyway I can test this as it seems like a probable fault

Sri- Different connection does not mean different bus.
You can test it by closing out of FCP and disconnecting your external firewire drive then relaunch FCP and set your second internal drive (not system drive) as the scratch drive.
Another tip is to save your project file to a folder on your system drive so the project and media are not on the same drive.
Project files are small compared to media files and your system drive can handle them easily.

I ran into a capture problem and discovered that G5’s / FCP have a Firewire conflict when using more than one Firewire device. I have an external Lacie 1TB drive, connected it via USB instead of Firewire and all is good. Known problem on the Apple support site.
