capture problems
I keep getting a message about problems reading data from the source tape during capture. I am using FCP 5.1.2, and capturing from a DV tape. I did notice when previewing audio through the capture scratch window, it sounds distorted at times, and drops out at times. When I play the same tape through the same deck through a monitor it sounds fine. Is it possible the video was shot with the audio not set at 48KHz? Whether or not this could be the problem, is there a way to set the audio capture in FCP at a different rate-say 32KHz? FCP only seems to let me capture audio at 48KHz. Please Help! It would be greatly appreciated!

Go to audio/video settings -> capture presets and choose “DV NTSC 32 kHz” as your preset. If that’s not available, just edit your DV NTSC preset… at the bottom of the editor you’ll find “Quicktime Audio Settings”… you can select 32 kHz there.

What you get in FC while capturing is just a preview. Look if the files when captured look and sound well. And why you want to capture a worst quality audio (32Khz) when you can work with the original 48 Khz with higher quality?

Well, after capture, the files look fine, but the sound is still distorted and dropping out. This happens whether i’m capturing at 32 or 48. The reason I tried 32 is because I thought the person who shot these tapes may have shot it with the audio set at 32. I still have the problem whether 32 or 48, and get the message “capture has a problem reading data from the source tape” and capture is aborted. I figured it could be the tape or the DV deck, but it sounds fine when played through a monitor. The other weird thing is that it seems to happen at random during the capture, not always at the same points on the tape. Even stranger, one project captured fine, but later on down the line we tried to recapture it, and only that time did we have the audio problem. I’m stuck for now. Thanks for your reply though.

Thanks I can change my settings now. Unfortunately I still get the problem. Guess I gotta keep troubleshooting…….
