  • Capture Now thru AJA IO including Timecode

Posted by Tim Philo on February 5, 2010 at 3:26 pm

A common workflow that I do is to take an HD-SDI feed from an EX3, routed through an IO box, then firewired into FC to Capture Now, generally as ProRes.

I haven’t figured out how to bring a timecode through from the camera or generate a timecode on capture so our logging can be better. It’s great to be able to set time-of day, then let the logger work off a watch. Also, having timecode for transcription services is sometimes necessary. I say these things just so I don’t get the answer (which in all honesty I’ve given to clients) that you don’t need timecode.

Is the timecode embedded in the HD-SDI signal in a way that FC can’t extract it on the fly?

Any input on this front would be much appreciated.

    Hi tim,
    You can not do it.
The ioHd is able to pick an external TC through the RS-422, but no from the SDI.

    Thanks.
Further research has brought me to the AJA VTR Exchange software. Will this solve my problems, if I capture using that utility instead of FC?
Or is this an SDI problem. The TC is there in the signal, isn’t it? FC 7 can’t see it, can it?

Well, it is ALSO able to take TC directly from a camera equipped with an SDI TC out spigot. That is one of the beauties of this box. BUT, I don’t think the EX3 has a TC out spigot on it, does it? If not, then SOL.

I have captured embedded timecode from SDI using AJA VTR Exchange with the IO, IO Express and Kona3.

And you are correct FCP 7 can’t see it via SDI.

I have had mixed results capturing with VTR exchange, its is great and i’m sure it was the drive I was capturing to that caused the problems but I thought i’d just say it.

Yes the ioHD can read SDI rp188 tc, but only using VTR Exchange.

    FCP cannot do this, unfortunately.

    [Rafael Amador] “Hi tim,

    That is incorrect.

The IoHD does allow for LTC timecode capture via HDSDI, it even has a dedicated spigot on the back of the unit for LTC.

    Thanks, Gary.
But I guess I’m not understanding whether this is an answer to my question. The “spigot” isn’t going to send to Final Cut, is it? In Capture Now?
The EX3 does have a timecode out BNC, so can I go into the IO with that, non-embedded, then combine the parts for a signal that FC will Capture Now?
I could experiment, but I’m not in the studio with the gear for another couple of weeks.

    Final Cut cannot capture TLC.

You need to use AJA’s VTR exchange app to capture LTC timecode, Final Cut cannot understand LTC over anything other than 9pin serial.

And if it could, the world would be full of much more love. 😀

    Right.
I meant that FC could only get the TC from the RS-422.
If would be possible to use the TC IN would be great, because the EX-3 have TC OUT.
    Best
