Capture Now Sync Drift
I’ve searched the Forum, but have not found this same issue.
A client facility uses FCP 7.0.3 on a Mac Pro 2.93 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon machine. Captures come through an AJA Kona LHi. The house standard is 1080i 29.97 ProRes. We record live webcasts to AJA KiPro but simultaneously do a live Capture Now into FCP. Lately, the file captured by FCP has audio & video drifting out of sync with video lagging behind. The file starts in sync, but as the capture continues the problem gets progressively worse; as much as 10 frames off by the end of a 30 min capture.
Audio is 48KHz in both Capture Settings and Timeline. The problem is visible in the captured source file as well as on timeline. Files of same webcast recorded to KiPro are fine. If we import the KiPro files into FCP project, those files play fine. We did a test with AJA VTR Xchange to make sure it wasn’t a problem with the Kona LHi. A 40min live capture was fine.
Any similar issues? Is there a setting in FCP that is being overlooked?
Capture Now in FCP greatly speeds up our workflow if edits are needed. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Is the Kona locked to house sync or free running. If so is the feed into the Kona also house synced?

Yes. Everything is synched to the house throughout the facility.

Did the drift start to happen after an OS upgrade or any other system changes? It might be worth checking drivers for the Kona are up to date, particularly if an automatic OS update has happened. There have been reports here of graphics strangeness and other issues with V/O tool when the upgrade 10.6.8 is applied.
The Kona drivers would be an easy place to start. If they are up to date it might be worth reinstalling them in case there has been a corruption somwhere.
As always basic maintenance like permissions repair and preference trashing should be tried whenever FCP acts strangely.Let us know if you crack it.

After some checking, it appears that a Matrox card for accelerating H.264 encodes was installed recently in the Mac Pro by the in-house computer maintenance team. The card was removed, a Capture Now was tried, but the issue persisted. Only after removal of the Matrox software that was installed with the card did the Capture Now perform perfectly. Audio & video sync was consistent through a one hour Capture Now.
