“Capture Now” can’t find timecode
When I try “Capture Now”, the capture screen comes up and at the bottom it says “finding timecode”, but never does.
My tape just continues playing and my computer just keeps thinking. I actually have to reset my computer because it just keeps thinking and you can’t go back to the program, or abort. What’s the deal?
There is definitely timecode on the tape and it’s not broken anywhere. -

Please give full specifications of your system, computer, drives, decks, how everything is connected and the settings you have on your material and the settings you’re using in the application.
It would also be helpful to know which application you’re using.

I’m using FCP 3 Academic on a G4.
It has Dual 1 Ghz processors, 256 mb RAM and a 200 gig hard drive.
My DV Cam is a Samsung consumer camera (cost about $450 US)
It is connected by 4-pin firewire to an ADVC Analog-Digital Converter which connects by 6-pin firewire to the G4.
I realize that the converter isn’t necessary, but I haven’t gotten around to getting a 4-to-6 pin firewire cable.
As far as settings are concerned, I tried using device control (setting IN and OUT points for capture), but my camera can’t find the IN point (it just scans around it). So device control is off.
Preview is disabled. I’m not sure how to enable it.
Scratch disks have plenty of room.
The timecode is intact.
I’m using NTSC DV on Final Cut, seeing as that is what my camera is.
If there’s is anything else that would be helpful, just let me know.
If you solve this problem for me, I’d love ya.
I just spent $1200 US on this system and I’m pretty frustrated that I can’t use it.

I think you need to try it with the proper 4-6pin cable avoiding the AtoD box before you go any further down the troubleshooting path.
