    New G5 system (Dual 2.3, quad core, GeForce 6600, 8GB ram)
    2 Lacie d2 Extreme 500gb drives via F800 cable
    AJA I/O

    Having crashes/freezes when trying to capture Dig Beta via the I/O (SDI/AES) and have FCP setting at 10 bit uncompressed SDI/AES 48k and capturing to external Lacie drives via F800. Is there something missing in the chain? Are the Lacie drives too slow to capture 10bit uncompressed?

    Of course the internal HD can handle the data rate but with the amount of material we need to capture, it’s not an alternative to capture, move large amounts of data and then relink.

    Any suggestions? Thinking of trying a G Media drive? Thanks for any help.

    If you want to do 10bit uncompressed, you should have the two units RAIDed together. A single Big Disk Extreme will do 10bit capture if it’s completely empty and no fragmented. If you have a lot of fragmentation, the drive will not work with 10bit.

    You should really be running Fibre Channel or a high speed SATA when working with 10bit uncompressed.

    Our plan for next year is to put in an xraid via fibre but need a short term solution. I read your review on the G-raid drives and if I read it correctly, you are suggesting that we get two G-Raid drives, stripe them and run them off the F800 port on the G5 to get 10 bit uncompressed? No need for an extra card?

    Not sure, but I think that your problem may lie with the fact that the IO likes to completely command the FireWire bus. I have been told that when using the IO you should not have any other FireWire devices attached. That info may be old… but it’s something to look at.

    It the IO is trying to pull in uncompressed 10-bit over it’s own FireWire, I would suppose that writing that data to disc through FireWire as well might be causing you some problems.

    It was quite a while ago that we got all our equipment, so something may have changed, but it’s food for thought.

    Hello,
    Since you have 2 drives, I would suggest that you connect each drive on a different FW800 port (use FW800 PCI card) and then stripe them with OS X Disk Utility.
    The LaCie Big Disk is officially certified by AJA so it will handle this type of project.

    Even though you have the IO on a FW400 port and the drives on the 800 port they are still sharing the same bus, which is more than likely what is causing your problems. Get a PCIe firewire card (if they’re available yet) and run the drives off that and stripe them as a Raid 0 as others have suggested. Also, I could be wrong here, but doesn’t SDI carry the audio as well? You shouldn’t need AES connections.

    Thank you for all the suggestions. We’re going to try the PCI F800 card first, if that has issues, then 2 500GB SATA drives, then on to GRaid but hopefully the Lacie’s on a separate FW800 card will do the trick.
