  • Capture issue with JVC HD100

I’m having an issue capturing footage with a JVC HD100 via firewire. I am trying to load 10 to 15 minute chunks of footage so I can sub clip. However, at every point the camera started/stoped recording (where the index marker would be) it’s breking the clip up. Now, I know that’s normal but the problem is FCP is not capturing 7-8 seconds of footage after index point!

In other words, everytime FCP is making a new clip for the bin I loose 7-8 seconds of footage. I’ve tried to change some of the settings with the TC break options, but that really doesn’t seem to make a difference.

I’m using the HDV 720 24p easy setup in FCP v6 (brand new). I’ve never had to work with these JVC cams before, but there does seem to be some issues out there.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,

The issue you are dealing with has to do with the MPEG-2 type recording this camera does, and the long GOP. The only way around it is to pre-roll and post-roll about 7-10 seconds around your take. Then, the few seconds FCP takes to lock on to the timecode (your lost seconds) will happen in the pre-roll or post roll. Fact of life dealing with HDV.

You can actually make yourself look and sound really cool on the set, by pre-rolling, then saying “speed” or “rolling” before you say “action”. heh, heh

Do a search here under JVC or HDV; you’ll find a wealth of info.

Well said. From what I’m hearing all the HDV cameras do this with FCP.

Thanks for the tip. I have to agree with you there. That’s an editor peeve of mine. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to tell camera people to leave post roll at the end of tape, or to give a few seconds before and after takes. Of course I’m not usually on the set to smack their knuckles with a BNC cable.

It still seems silly the FCP would let there be that much missing footage between takes. I have to wonder if that is a JVC problem?

I’ve also worked with a Sony Z1U and the HVR-M25 in the HDV 1080i60 codec with no problems. Hmmmm.

    Thanks,
    Matt

I know for fact the Sony V1U has this problem.

Still though anyone properly shooting stuff should be pre/post rolling at least 5-10 seconds anyways.
