    i’m using FCP 5.1.4 and the canon xh-a1 HD. when i capture, it looks like the start is clean and as i go it get grainy (good grain) but grainy. how do i get it to stay clear? i have the FCP settings to capture HD1080

    The grain was likely introduced when you were shooting. In this case, the grain is recorded on the tape.

    Compare the direct out from the tape deck to the output of FCP after capture on the same external monitor. They will very likely be the same, meaning that FCP’s capture is not adding grain.

    If you still need to remove the grain, there are expensive plug-ins to do this from Boris FX and Sapphire. There is also a remove grain filter in After Effects.

    Is the video grainy when it’s done capturing or just in the preview window when it’s capturing? Is that what you mean?

    If you’re capturing over firewire, you’re just copying information off of the tape. So if it gets more grainy it’s because it was shot that way, not because of how it’s being imported.
