Not sure if my thinking is correct… with more info generated in formats like HD/HD50/DVCPRO/DVC50/HDV; they need better capture capabilities to prevent information loss during transfer as well as increasing the over all capture speed using hardware like the Kona cards?

With that in mind, formats like DV transfers less info and therefore can be captured via FW800 a significantly slower capture method?

Could someone please recommend a few publications that would help me better understand these concepts – Pros/ cons of FW800 vs. Capture cards as well as the rest: Capture/ Export, Compression Up / Down Convert FW800 and Capture Cards i.e. Kona(s).

    Many thanks,
    Jason

All of those formats except Uncompressed HD can be captured at lossless quality (from the original) via Firewire to FW 800 drives. HDV is actually a very low data rate. Not sure what HD50 is as I’ve not heard of that one.

DVCPro HD at 60fps is only 13MB/sec so to capture to a FW800 drive is no big deal there. I work with Fibre Channel arrays when working in any HD format just because I like to get the most real-time capabilities as we do a TON of color correction in HD.

there’s nothing to compare with FW800 vs. a capture card. Two different concepts. One is for data transfer to a media storage device. Your media storage device must be able to handle the data throughput of the video format you plan to work with.

The other is for video / audio I/O to your computer. Your video capture card determines what types of video formats your system is capable of working with.

    Sorry, hit post too quick.

Up / DownConvert is only provided by a capable video card at this time. The Kona 2 & 3 offers SD to HD UpConvert and I’m not sure if any other Mac based products offer that yet.

With that being said, does one have to purchase some sort of capture device then, such as the Kona? Or, is there an existing capture device that comes with the G5.

Could you suggest a book to better differentiate these concepts?

    Thanks,
