Capture DV from a JVC GY-DV300
Having a few problems tonight.
My Sony deck is is in the shop at the moment and I need to capture some DV video. I got a “loaner” camcorder from the repair shop to use in the mean time. The problem is it doesn’t seem to play at all well with Final Cut.
I’m trying to use a JVC GY-DV300 for capturing DV via Firewire. The deck control seems to be spotty at best, starting out more or less OK and then quickly going down hill from there. Eventually I get FCP switching between VTR OK and No Communication. The video transferred in via Firewire is just as flakey. It MIGHT actually see the video for a few seconds but after that, the capture window just sits on a freeze frame. All and all, it doesn’t seem to work worth a crap.
Has anyone else out there tried to use this particular camcorder with FCP? Any helpful hints? Or is this combination just not workable?
I’ve tried all the flavors of Firewire control, including the DVCPro HD preset. (Hey, you never know…)
Weird thing is that my full sized JVC GY-DV700 works perfectly. You’d think that they would have the save protocol, but it looks like they are different. I’d rather not use my shooting camera as a deck if possible, but…
I running FCP 5.1.x on a 2.33 G5 DP. I usually capture through an AJA IOLA but for this project I’ve been given good old fashioned Mini-DV tapes. And…I had the AJA powered off while attempting to capture from the camcorder so there shouldn’t have been any conflicts between the two Firewire devices.
Advice? I mean besides dubbing it or getting a different deck at 10:27 in the evening…

Try changing the device control settings to FireWire Basic.

I tried all of the Firewire choices and the same thing happens-erratic behaviour, dropped frames and loss of deck control. I vaguely remember seeing posts about problems with some older JVC cameras a few years ago. Maybe this is one of the models?
I borrowed a Panasonic DVX-100b for the session to load in the DV footage, so I guess I’ll return the JVC to the repair shop, thank them for the gesture and wait to get my deck back.
