I know this has to be one of the biggest noob questions out there, but I really wanted to know the advantages of using a capture card: Kona and Decklink. I have searched for such an answer, but all the threads mostly deal with which is the better card between the kona and the decklink. So what features do capture cards offer to you, who needs them and who uses them.

I went to a small school and studied film and mostly shoot film shots, documentaries and soon feature lenght narativs but want to move into HD in the near future (with the panasonic HVX200). What kind of gains would i get by adding a capture card?

Sorry for such a nooby question but if someone out there could pass along some knowledge or even link me to a good introductary article or a thread i missed i would be greatly appreciated. thanks

    Rob,

What used to be just a capture card is today much, much more. Most of the cards allow video I/O (input/output) via both analog component and SDI, analog audio I/O via XRL cables, digital audio I/O via the SDI connection, as well as providing deck control and timecode via RS-422 cable, and usually monitor output as well. In other words, anything isn’t done via firewire and lots more… So, I guess you could say they’re pretty valuable…

    Hope this helps,
    DRW
