    Here’s a new thread to chew on…

I’m having to wrestle with the idea of captioning. We already do this for SD video for broadcast but we will have to look at it for HD real soon.

At the moment, there are very few HD encoders available. As a matter of fact, the only one I’ve seen personally is the EEG unit. I know someone who is using this unit and seems to be having nightmares with it. Its been in and out of the shop many times since April. CPC makes MacCaption but its only compatible with MPEG2 video stream, not HD-SDI output.

Funny how this business works… the FCC says we have to caption SD video and the business is moving HD, the broadcasters all want their shows captioned in HD. So what do we do that is cost effective?

    Wayne,

We’re in the same boat! Only difference is that we’ve been outsourcing this task for SD, and now that we’re transitioning to HD, we’re going to do it in house. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I can tell you that there is no “quick and easy” solution. There should be, but to my knowledge, there isn’t. That’s why we’ve been sending this process out of house.

Sadly enough… We have to do the same thing.

You’d think that someone out there would come up with a solution for us, just like the subtitle issue. Yeah, I know there are subtitle programs like DH Subtitle (which we use) but it would be nice to be able to use the caption file or export a file from the caption software to import into subtitle program.

I know… I’m asking too much to help us editors save time…

Send the show to CaptionMax. That’s what we do. Incredibly cost effective and easy too. Send them a finished master, they send a captioned master to the networks.

    eer, Wayne,
the DH subtitle plugin is NOT a subtitle program, it’s just a text plugin.
    this is a subtitle program:

And for subtitles, you CAN import a .scc file (Scenarist).
Keep in mind that subtitles follow different rules than captions.
But, if you have a caption file to start with, it will save you time.

I agree… DH Subtitle is not a subtitler, just a on-screen text plugin.

Thanks for pointing me to your subtitle program. I’ll give it a look and see how it fits in our workflow.
