After beginning and working with a FCE project for the last several days
I opened the latest version a short time ago and got this:

“The application cannot continue. Another application with an
identical serial number is already running on your network.”

I am operating FCE HD 3.5.1 on a PowerMac G5/Dual 2.5 GHz (Motorola)
which had been previously partitioned into 10 disks by the original owner.

I installed FCE on one particular partition and used it for many months
until that partition “crashed” and has no longer been operable.
I was able to trash the application from that partition, and I reinstalled
    FCE on a different partition.

The FCE application exists on NO OTHER PARTITIONS but the one
I have been using for many months. Why is the system sensing the
application on another part of my network?

    Thanks in advance.

I haven’t experienced this exact set of circumstances, but I have moved FC from one computer to another, and I had to “deactivate” the first installation before activating the second one. I’m guessing you can’t run the first one (from your description) so you’ll probably need to call Apple and explain your circumstances, they can (I’m pretty sure) deactivate your serial number so that you can activate it on the new installation.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for such quick response! But I think I’ve found the solution:

At various times during the past 2.5 years I’ve had FCE 3.0 and 3.5.1 installed on both a PowerBook and a PowerMac simultaneously, and
    used both successfully.

Once in a great while I would get the warning I’ve been struggling
with today, but eventually it would “go away” and all would be well.

For the past two hours I have mounted and unmounted the partitions
on my PowerMac, verified the partitions and repaired those requiring
    such.

I’ve disconnected the LaCie drive that contained my video and project
    files.

    I’ve restarted 12 times.

    No luck.

Then, I turned to my PowerBook and noticed that I had opened
FCE 3.5.1 earlier today on it and that it was still running.
I closed FCE on the PowerBook, restarted the PowerMac, opened
FCE on the PowerMac and it worked.

My only conclusion (or guess) is that, because the same
version of FCE with the same serial number was open and
running on both computers at the same time, this was detected
by Apple via the internet, since both were hooked up to
active internet connections at the same time, also.
Thus, Apple is capable and able to send out this warning when
it detects, via the internet, this type of situation exists.
Without the two, simultaneous internet connections on both
the notebook and desktop, how could the desktop version
“know” that the notebook version was running?

If anyone else has a better explanation, I’d love to hear it.

    Thanks again, Miriam.

Not via the internet, via your local network. If both machines are running on the same network, i.e. wireless router or cable modem, then FCE will see the same serial number on both machines. Technically you are only permitted to have the software installed on one desktop and one laptop at any given time.

Even there, you can only operate it on one machine at a time.
