  • Can’t remove letterboxing?

I’m trying to edit a video from Youtube that has audio that’s not in synch with the video (for my personal viewing), and am trying to render it, but I can’t get rid of the letterboxing that Vegas creates with the project. I matched the project settings to that of the video-480×360, PAR of 1.0, progressive scan, and 29.999 fps.

Here is a link to the original video (with no letterboxing).

Here’s how it appears in my Vegas project.

    Full screen in my project.

And trying to correct it by setting the aspect ratio to 16×9 in the pan and crop function-which normally works, but here, does nothing to change the size of the image or to remove the letterboxing (yes, I realize that it’s keyframed to that one position, but I had it set to 16×9 for the entire video and at no point does it actually make the video 16×9 or remove the letterboxing).

    Finally, here’s a test upload I did.

Basically, it seems that no matter what, I have a 4:3 image that’s letterboxed. Any ideas?

I just found the answer and got it working, but I want to leave this post up to be a lesson to everyone-sometimes just laying out, step by step, what you’ve done, so that you can hear/read yourself doing it, is enough to find your mistake.

What I was missing was that I’m not supposed to changed the aspect ratio in the project. You have to remove letterboxing in a situation like this in the render, by rendering to widescreen. Duh.

It’s still not quite perfect, though, so I’m wondering if I’m missing anything else. I rendered to 640×360 widescreen, PAR of 1, as mp4, with small black bars along the top, bottom, and sides. Here it is.

For something like this, you should be setting your project settings to match the desired output format (eg 640×360), then dropping your 4:3 footage on the timeline and cropping the video event with the crop aspect set to “Match output aspect”. Crop the 4:3 event so that you just get rid of the letterboxing, then render with the same frame format (eg Internet 360p).

That YouTube video already has top and bottom BLACK BARS.

It looks like the person who uploaded it, simply captured it from their standard-definition cable-tv signal and uploaded it to YouTube without cropping the BLACK BARS out.

The actual video – without the black bars – is suppose to be widescreen 16:9. Given that the video frame size is 480×360 with black bars, that would mean the actual video (without the black bars) is just 480×270.

So you need to change your project settings. Personally, I’d go with a more standard frame size for 16:9 like 640×360.

So your PROJECT SETTINGS should be:
    1. FRAME SIZE = 640×360
    2. PAR = SQUARE
    3. SCAN-TYPE = None (Progressive)
    4. FRAME RATE = 30

After importing the video, then use the PAN/CROP tool. Simply select the preset for 16:9.

That is it! No more black bars!
