  • Can’t Pro Type Titler do Scrolling Credits?

Posted by Ken Bennett on February 11, 2010 at 1:30 am

I’m finishing up my first Vegas project and I’m ready to add scrolling credits at the end. I’ve reviewed most of the VASST training DVD on Pro Type Titler, but for some reason (at least I haven’t seen it) it does not cover how to create scrolling credits, which I use on every job. After spending an hour typing in my credits, I don’t see where it will allow me to make a scroll out of it. The time line does not give me any option to creat keyframes either. It’s all ghosted out.

The DVD spends most of the time discussing animating text, whish is really cool, but what about the basics?

All the other CG programs I’ve used have actual settings for creating scrolls and crawls, including speed and psoitioning. I even tried the basic Credit Scroll in Vegas but it appears to be very elementary and very limited.

So, can Pro Type Titler create scrolling titles? If so, HOW? Is there any training on creating credit scrolls? How does Vegas approch scrolling credits?

    Thanks.

On the Transform tab of the Text Block Properties, press the Toggle Automation button next to the Y Offset to animate a credit roll. Like this:

This will allow you to create keyframes to make the text scroll in the vertical direction. Likewise you can automate the X offset to make a crawl.

Thanks, John. It’s rough coming from another NLE where you know how to do all these basic things then trying to learn the same in a new NLE like Vegas. Next I have to learn how to put my images into 3D motion tracks for photo montages as such.

    jr, nice response.

Care to share how you do the “torn edges” on the screen shot you posted? I can imagine a not-so-easy manual way to do it in PS, but I bet you have something easier.

Yup, I use Techsmith SnagIt 9.0. This is the same company that makes Camtasia. The arrows and captions and everything are SnagIt. You can have it start when Windows start and stay resident. Then you just press the Print Screen (PrtSc) key, annotate and save. It can even capture text from a dialog box which is very handy for sending error messages in emails. I don’t know how I would live without this little utility doing my tutorials. I’ve been using it since version 7.0. Best $49 I ever spent. 😉

Note: I have absolutely no affiliation with Techsmith. I’ve just been using their products for years and am a very satisfied customer.

Wow, I remember using snagit a hundred years ago. It may have been with DOS, or maybe Windows 3.0. Thanks, I’ll take a look at snagit 9.0.

Thanks so much for this. After fiddling around for 15mins with Pro Type Titler, I searched this post out on Google, and had a perfect result in 5mins. Thanks for the clear, concise and easy to execute instructions.

    Thanks!
