Download this tool (it is free) and run it. It will give you a whole lot of information about your computer and in that information it will tell you what version of Windows, how much ram, cpu, etc. you have.

It is called Belarc Advisor. Don’t paste the entire results on here as it will tell you your software activation keys and we (nor anyone else on the internet) don’t need to know that.

Since you don’t even know what operating system you are using or anything about the file, it would be helpful if you did as Jeremy suggested and download the free GSpot utility and load your file into it and post a screenshot of what it says.

GSpot should look something like this:

Hmmm… that’s a standard definition PAL MPEG1 file. There is no reason why Vegas shouldn’t be able to play this. Did you install any Codec-Paks on your PC (like K-Lite)? These might be interfering with Vegas’ ability to play the file.

In GSpot, way down at the bottom left, press the MS A/V [1] button, then the [2] button and make sure it plays. Let’s us know if this works.

When you drop it on the timeline, can you see the video?

What happens with you try and play it?

i’ve done all that and nothings worked, i’ve print screened my vegas pro and i’ll explain best i can what’s going on…

So, the play/stop buttons at the top in the middle (1)are the only things i’ve got to be able to play the video, and when i click them, the original video plays on the screen to the right (3), but on the time line you might be able to see, i’ve slow motioned the video, but despite that, it still plays the original version of the video:/ i got vegas on trial, for a bit a while ago, and had no problems with it.

OK, just for future reference… you don’t Vegas Pro. You have Vegas Movie Studio. 😉

You said the video doesn’t play but the video does play. This is good.

Also, your project is set to HDV 1440×1080 and your video is 640×480 standard definition. You might want to select a project resolution that is closer to your video. In fact, you can make your project match your video exactly using the Match Media Settings button like this:

Does it play correctly if you don’t slow it down?

yeah i’m in the habit of calling it that because i used a friends pro for ages, sorry.

And yeah if it’s just the raw video with no effects it plays fine.. but as soon as i add effects, it just plays the original video, i had a trial version and it had a box on with like play from beginning, play, pause and stop etc on it? so no idea what’s gone on with this one.. :/

Which PLAY button are you pressing? If it’s the one in the circle labeled (1) then that will NEVER show anything except the original footage. That play button previews the original media only. You should press the PLAY button at the bottom of the timeline (or press the SPACE BAR). See if that helps.
