  • Can’t open old project in 6.1.3

Posted by Sue Lawson on June 17, 2008 at 5:59 pm

    Hi all!

I’m having a problem opening an old project in FCP 6.0.3

(I believe it was last worked on in FCP 5.1.3… if it helps, this was a project from April or May of 2007)

When opening, FCP seems to have no issue reading the file… I get the “The file format of this project is from an earlier version. Would you like to update this project file?” — Yes.

FCP then freezes up during the “updating this project” stage of opening the project. (Spinning beach ball of death until I force quit)

    Any ideas or work-arounds?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If when you went from FCP 5 to FCP 6 you didn’t do this as a clean installation… i.e. erased your startup disk and started over with OS and application installs, It’s likely that this is the problem. Same clean install should be done when you change OS too like from Tiger to Leopard…

    Thanks, Jerry!

You’re right. I didn’t do a clean install. I’ll also admit to a bit of confusion.

After I erase my startup disk, won’t I need to reinstall all existing applications?

… and apologies for what I’m sure is a very basic question, but if I need to reinstall all apps, then how do I install the upgrade from Studio 1 to Studio 2? Don’t I need to have Studio 1 still installed?

Yes you need to install all new apps. Very tedious and time consuming process.

You only need your serial number for FCS1 when you upgrade. That does not physically have to be installed.

I have had this problem as well, and it was trying to update a 6.0.2 project to 6.0.3. We were able to fix it by trashing preferences and restarting, but it was pretty annoying given that the .3 update is buried inside the Pro Apps update, with no warning that it will be installed.

    Thanks Joel.

Trashing prefs is still a better option than having to do the very time consuming reinstall of all apps (as I admit to ignorance of the need (or at least “best practice) of performing a “clean install”.

Guess I’m a prime example of “live and learn”.

Another good reason NOT to just install updates
    when they come out.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
