Can’t Move FCP 24pA footage to AE

Hello,

I am currently editing a short in FCP that has a number of visual effects that we need to move into AE for. Here’s the stats on everything we’re running:

FCP 6.0.5
p2 footage from HVX-200, shot @ 1080 24pA
FCP ingested via Log & Transfer using DVCPRO HD 1080p30 (this was what fcp defaulted to)
we are trying to move over to Windows AE CS3

We have a picture lock cut inside fcp, but when exporting to DVCPRO HD 1080p30 quicktime files, there is an error on the AE end that AE cannot read the codec. So my question is, is there a different/better way I can do a lossless export out of fcp so that my FX guys can work in AE and then return footage to me? Are all the above settings ok, or should we not be in 1080p30? I’m new to working with p2 footage so I just wanted to make sure I didn’t bork the import and that we don’t have to start over.

Thanks again for any help you guys can provide. If it turns out I’m ok on the fcp end and this is an AE problem, let me know and I’ll post this on the AE forums.

Shane’s Stock Answer #51 – Cannot view DVCPRO HD, HDV or ProRes QT files on your computer.

The DVCPRO HD, HDV and ProRes codecs only comes with FCP. If your computer does not have FCP installed, it cannot view these quicktime files. It doesn’t matter if it is a Mac or PC, without FCP installed, you cannot view these files.

If you need to view ProRes material, you can download the ProRes decoder (mac and windows compatible) for ProRes

If your footage was captured as DVCRO HD you can buy the Calibrated DVCPRO HD decoder:

If you have MXF files from a P2 camera and you need to view the footage on a computer without FCP, you can download P2CMS from Panasonic:

Or you need the other party to compress the footage into a format your computer can play, like H.264.

This has nothing to do with the problem you posted about, but if I read this correctly, you’ve edited your whole film at the wrong frame rate.

We shot 24pA and we’re editing in a 23.98 timebase, fcp just tags everything as 1080p30. FCP also did the pulldown removal on ingest via log and trans, so all the footage looks fine and exports great, just not to a windows/AE set up.

Thanks for the tip on the decoder Shane. If we get this, can my AE guy use this to convert to a different codec/format that he can use, or can he just view clips?

Hey Dave,

We did remove the pulldown and are in a 23.98 timebase. FCP just tags 24pA footage as 1080p30, and I haven’t found a 1080 24pA tag inside 6.0.5.

The After Effects work does need to match framerate because we are compositing CG elements into existing footage. I just need to find a way to get into AE that won’t trash our quality since it has to go from AE to our colorist and then back to me for final.

They can DECODE it to whatever. But they cannot ENCODE it back. So they will have to render out to another format that you will then have to transcode into another format. So you will have generation loss. At least 2 levels.
