  • Can’t layer mask collapsed layer in 3D! Workaround?

Posted by Greg Neumayer on November 15, 2005 at 3:35 am

I’ve got a giant world map with layers for countries, cities, text, etc. all lined up in Illustrator and imported into AE. In AE, I’ve separated the layers a bit on the z axis to give it a bit of depth. Now, I’d like to reveal the nations using a vector art pattern I’ve created in AI, but AE won’t let me mask a collapsed layer. The workaround (ver.6, manual pg. 343) simply states, “turn off the collapse switch” but I can’t do that because I’m zoomed clear into one country, and there is very obvious aliasing if I uncollapse.
Is there a REAL work-flow for this situation? The only thing I can think of is to make my artwork so large in AI before bringing it in, that I’ve got enough resolution headroom that I can zoom in without having to have my vector art collapsed. (i.e. it’s all just raster art now). Is there a better way?

    Thanks,
    Greg.

    track matte maybe?

Use the matte on layer above by either using luminance or an alpha to mask the layer beneath it out.

Yeah, unfortunately I tried both types of track mattes. (single layer above the layer to be masked, or using the track matte’s transfer control to matte the entire stack.) AE seems to just ignore it.
