  • Can’t key out black from animation

I’ve got this little animated graphic that I use in FCP. It’s a transparent animated logo that was originally created as a lower field file, but the work I do in FCP is progressive, so I converted the animation to progressive. Now, when I drop my new progressive animated logo into my FCP timeline, it’s no longer transparent, but rather surrounded by the ubiquitous black.

I’ve been playing around with the Keylight effect in AE, and I’ve had success with it so far with other footage, but I can’t seem to get rid of the black in my newly converted animation. This probably has something to do with the fact that the original file was already transparent, but I just can’t get there from here.

    Thanks a lot.

You used the wrong codec when you did the conversion. Go back to the original file and export it using the Animation codec with alpha active. Keylight will, if pressed, do luma keying but that’s not what it’s for.

David, thanks for the reply. You’re correct, I was using the ProRes 422 codec during my progressive conversion before. I’m currently trying to figure out how to convert interlaced to progressive with the Animation settings, but for some reason FCP still shows my animation as lower field. (That’s for another thread, I know 🙂

Fwiw, I’m able to key out the black with my ProRes file, but I have to use 3 different keys to get it just right. Not nearly as sweet as Keylight in AE. Thanks again. I shall press on.

You could right click in FCP and choose Composite Mode and then Screen to key out the black. The downside to using this technique would be if there is any black in your actual animation that will be keyed out as well. I’m assuming there isn’t any though, otherwise you would have ended up with that problem already since you’ve been doing keying on the file.
