Just received my new copy of V10 in the mail and uninstalled the 10 demo. Went to install the full version and it says I have a newer version and it won’t install. There isn’t a single Sony product on my computer now, and not a single instance of “sony” or “vegas” in the registry. I tried running Revo uninstaller and it failed, saying that “c:/windows/installer/vegas10.cab doesn’t exist” I tried reinstalling a demo of 10 so I could then uninstall it, and it says no can do, remove your existing copy first.

Tried turning off firewall, avast, etc. No dice. I’m bout to pop a cap in Vegas.

For what’s it worth, if I try to proceed with the 32-bit install it will let me (I had the 64 demo and need the 64 install), and if I try to install DVD Architect it proceeds. I didn’t proceed with either.

Try deleting the vegas folder in “program filessony” directory and then running a registry cleaner like ccleaner from piraform.com.

Oops – that was your mistake. The only difference from the demo version is the serial number. Just apply the serial number and you’re finished.

Now you have a mess in the registry. Can you go to a restore point before installing the demo? That may clean it up.

I guess I don’t agree with the idea that by uninstalling a program one should expect to have created problems with the registry. That’s not normal computer function. In any case I fixed it by finding all keys that had even veg in them. There was a rogue key somewhere and that did it.

In my opinion, here’s what happened: You downloaded and installed the CURRENT version. You then uninstalled the current version and attempted to install an older version. The simplest solution is to reinstall the current version from your initial download.

Normally, there’s no problem. but some programs, like Vegas or Photoshop (really, any expensive program) will leave a secret breadcrumb when you install the demo version. This is used to prevent people from deleting a demo program and re-installing it to reset the demo clock. Uninstalling the program does not delete the breadcrumb.

For future use, you never need to uninstall anything from Sony when upgrading.

    Hi Steve,

Just jumping in to confirm what you stated.

I have Sony Platinum 9 and just got Sony Platinum 10 HD. So based on your comment then, I don’t need to uninstall 9, it will just automatically get overwritten during the 10 install process?

I assume as well then my files of current projects won’t get overwritten?

Let me know if I’ve understood correctly.

    Thank you for your time
    Eric

Even better. Upgrading Vegas does not replace older versions. You can have both V9 *and* v10 installed. But wait, there’s more. Your Version 9 Vegas is still fully licensed and usable. What many users do is to move the older version to another PC and you can run both at the same time. But, that’s not all… You can transfer (sell or give away) your Version 9 license to someone else. Just tell Sony who the new owner is. (Now the fasttalkingfineprint – your old license of Vegas cannot be used for another upgrade in the future. That’s a one-time per license opportunity).

    Thanks Steven!

That’s very good news. Excited to get the new version installed.

    Thanks again,
