Can’t Import AVI H264
Posted by Ken Matson on September 6, 2011 at 10:07 pmA client gave me an SD card with AVI files on it from his consumer camcorder. I tried to open in Vegas but it either says “can’t open” or I just get the “no drop” icon.
GSpot identifies it as a H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (in AVI). It says “codecs are installed”, so it should work right? As the song says … Why does everything have to be so complicated?
BTW Vegas 9 – 64 bit
TIA for any help!

September 9, 2011 at 2:58 pmAVC in an AVI wrapper is usually a bad idea for editing, anyway. If it were my problem, I’d drop the original into VLC or YAMB, re-mux to an MPEG-4 or MPEG-2 TS file wrapper, and try that in Vegas. If it’s ordinary everyday AVC, that should be just dandy.
One caveat — MPEG-2 TS and MPEG-4 are handled very differently in Vegas (and most other systems). So I’d check the audio, and re-mux to MP4 if I see AAC audio there, or to TS if I see AC-3 audio there. I don’t think Vegas will get the audio right if, for example, you try a TS file/stream with AAC audio in it.

September 9, 2011 at 9:34 pmIsn’t H264 also used in AVCHD recordings? My older version of Vegas 8 will not support AVCHD, however Vegas 9 Pro will support it. Are you using Vegas Movie Studio or “Pro”?

September 16, 2014 at 5:59 amSony Vegas Pro supports H.264 natively although, like Adobe Premier, it is pretty picky with the codecs of what it’ll accept. As far as I know Sony Vegas Pro doesn’t like H.264 in an AVI container. If you want to import H.264 to Sony Vegas Pro flawlessly, I recommend you to convert H.264 to a more editable format for Vegas Pro.

September 20, 2015 at 1:36 pmI have the same issue. I have an installation of VP13 on a desktop AND on a laptop, just as the license allows. On the laptop the h264 files open just fine and play from the Vegas timeline, on the desktop they will not. However, when on VP12 these same h264 files played fine on either machine.
So, what am I missing?
note: The obvious, “convert your files” answer doesn’t come remotely close to addressing the question. I have about 35 hours with of videos (45 to 90 minutes long each) to put open and close sequences on and re-render.

February 5, 2019 at 7:03 pmGreat news! I had the same issue with .avi files not being able to be imported and the tool below worked well to quickly convert my files into .mp4.
This is a set of free tools, though I recommend a donation as they deserve it, that convert files to different formats.
In this case using either the MediaER converted it to a .mp4 file and the proresER converted to prores. Both worked, but the .mp4 file size is much smaller.

February 16, 2019 at 11:11 pmPerhaps a little bit off-topic but perhaps related, I had to install Quicktime 7.6.5 before Vegas would recognise any of my H.264 MP4 files, as counter-intuitive as it sounds. The Quicktime version number is important, no higher, no lower. Quicktime installs the necessary MP4 CODECs Vegas needs. Avoid using K-lite CODEC packs like the plague as they mes up Vegas.
My system specs: Intel i7 7700k 4.20 GHz, GTX1060, 16GB RAM, Gigabye Z170 HD3, Vegas Pro 13 (x64), Windows 10 x64 Pro, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, VASST Infiniticam 1.7, Neat Video Pro 2.6
