  • Cant Get Video Input

Posted by Justin Edwards on August 1, 2006 at 8:46 pm

Just got the Kona3 and the Break Out Box. I am going OUT from Sony DSR45 deck, and IN Breakout Box by BNC (video) and XLR (audio) but getting nothing in my FCP capture viewer and Kona control panel says No Video under SDI 1 & 2.I tried easy setup for 8bit and 10 bit Uncompressed. Do I have something hooked up wrong? RS422 gives me deck control just cant get any sound or Picture. Oh also on the Deck I tried all switches…DV, Componet, Video, and still nothing. Its probably something stupidly simple.. Help Please!

    Thanks

First of all, does the DSR-45 have AES/EBU audio? If not your analog audio outputs won’t work. the Kona 3 is a digital input card only. Does your DSR-45 have SDI? Are you sure you are cabled properly? have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers, including firmware and control panel? To get audio you need to change the input from AES to SDI in the audio tab.

    We’ll start here.

according to the specs I’m seeing on-line, that deck does not support SDI output or input.

Who advised you to buy this combo. NONE OF THIS WILL WORK. The DSR-45 does NOT have SDI or AES outputs, and the Kona 3 does not take in an analog composite or component signal. You should have purchased a Kona LS, or Kona LH, or AJA I/O or AJA I/O LA. I advise you to return the Kona 3, as the converters you will need will cost more than simply buying a simple AJA I/O LA for $995, which will be perfect for the DSR-45.

YOU BOUGHT THE WRONG BOARD. SDI means SERIAL DIGITAL VIDEO, and the DSR-45 puts out ANALOG video and audio. AES IN means digital audio, not analog audio, which comes out of the DSR-45.

Even if I have the Break Out Box? I thought that would convert it all?

The break out box is SDI inputs only. It does video conversions once you get the signal in the box.

It does NOT convert Analog to SDI, nor is it implied in the literature. You need to get an external converter for that.

So any of you have a recommendation on Analog / Digital converters that will work with this system?

Look no further than AJA. You have some options. You can either get an io to feed your Kona 3, you can get an io LA to ingest analog material into FCP and monitor through the Kona, or you can get the new HD10AVA mini converter which will convert and embed everything for you. Also, if the Kona 3 is the wrong card for you and you need mostly analog inputs, AJA makes a the kona LH which has analog input, but it has no upconversion capabilities, cross conversion capabilities (720p to 1080i and vice versa) and does not have dual link functionality, but not having dual link is generally not a problem for most people. It’s the upconversion that you might miss.

    Hope this helps.

    Justin –
look – you bought the wrong unit. And now you want to buy converters to be able to use it correctly. Even AJA converters (or Cobalt, or Leitch or Miranda) will cost MORE than simply buying an AJA I/O LA, which is all you needed in the first place, and all you need now.
    Its under $995.

So now you are saying – “but isn’t there something for 200 bucks that will make this work” – NO NO NO – you have to RESEARCH before you buy, and you bought the wrong stuff. Buy the AJA I/O LA, and you will be done for now. If you buy the A/D and D/A converters (and all the audio converters you need too), you will have a confusing mess of cables on the floor, and you will get frustrated, AND it will cost you more money than the correct product – whcih is the AJA I/O LA.

Sometimes, you have to look, before you leap.

Ditto. If all you need is Analog I/O, return the K3 and get the Io LA. We run one alongside our Kona 3, but we require SD / HD and analog I/O.
