I suppose this is kind of a dumb newbie question but I can’t get the mic to work on my G5. I want to be able to use the voice-over tool in FCP Studio (OS 10.4.6). I bought a $20 Altec lansing headset, plugged the 3.5mm headphone jack into the rear audio-out of the G5 and the 3.5mm microphone jack into the audio line-in in the back of the G5, and nothing! The headphones work fine, but there is no signal comming in from the mic.

I tried a complicated work-around where I plugged the mic (from the headset) into a wireless Sennheiser transmitter, ran that through my Mackie mixer, ran the main output of the Mackie into the audio line-in in the back of the G5 and that DID work. I got a great signal. But only by running the mic through the Mackie (phantom power was NOT on).

What am I missing here??? Is there some sort of connection I need to get the mic to work directly with the G5?

I’m guessing that you are running a mic level (-60db) into the line level input on the back of the computer. There isn’t enough signal level for the computer to work off of. When you use the Mackie mixer, it’s boosting the level of the mic up to line level which the computer can take in. Try getting a mic pre-amp for your microphone to boost the level up before inputting it to the computer. Also, if the mic requires phantom power, the Mac will not provide it. You will again need a pre-amp that can provide the bias to the mic to power it. Or…just continue running it all thru the Mackie if that works OK.

Yup, that’s it. The mic is running a mic level into the computer. I’ll look into the iMic or just use the Mackie. The only tricky thing with the Mackie is that I’ll need about 10 adapters to get the mic’s 3.5mm plug to plug into the Mackie Mic inputs.
