  • Can’t get light streaks to look same when writing as with wiggle expression

Okay, so I did the “Creating Light Streaks” tutorial by Andrew Kramer and that all went fine. Using the wiggle expression it looks beautiful, but when I remove this and paste the mask path into the light’s position or parent the light to a null object and key movement, the streak gets much dimmer, smaller, and you can see all the 6 little masks that Particular is using as the particle. How can I make it look normal, like it does with the wiggle expression, and still have it follow the path (to write words)? I tried upping the size, but it looks bad and I don’t know what’s causing the dramatic difference. Thanks a lot!

I think you need to mess with the particular settings to get the emitter to output more particles. That’s probably why it looks “thinner” and “dimmer”. If you’re spacing the particles out too much, it’s not going to look bright.

Try upping the opacity of the particles in Particular, and also try upping the Particles per second.

I did a keyframed movement parenting the emitter light to a null, and it looked like it did with the wiggle expression, but the emitter was moving at about the same speed as it was with the wiggle expression.

The other thing is, if you’re using a path as in writing a name, you probably aren’t moving the emitter in Z space, so it’s not going to look as dynamic as the wiggled one. Try moving the emitter forward and back a bit as the path is followed. Maybe just wiggle it in the Z axis as it follows the path.

also, you can stretch the write on to happen over a longer period of time, then make a new comp and time remap it to fit in a shorter period of time. That would fix the sparseness of the emitter, and allow you to still get the write on to happen within the time you want it to happen.
