  • Can’t get handles to appear in the graph editor

I’m working through Mark Christiansen’s After Effects 7 book following the examples. The first time I selected handles in the graph editor and used the option key and command key combinations it worked perfectly. I tried to recreate the bouncing ball excercise in chapter 2 (I know, easy stuff, but I’m trying to get s solid base to work from) but I can’t get the corner handles to appear when I select the keyframes I want to adjust, even in the excercises I performed before I can’t get the handles to appear any more. I have the transform box option turned on and I’ve selected edit Value graph, but the handles just will not appear. I was trying to scale the vertical position keyframes so that the ball bounces less high with each repetition. I can do this manually but why can’t I use the handles to do it. Is this a bug or something.
    I’m using an iMac 2/2 AE7.0.1, OS10.4.9

Click on a keyframe to select it. You should see the handles then.

I tried this but the handles still won’t appear. I deleted my preferences twice and even tried to reproduce the project in a brand new project in case the other file is corrupt. I still can’t get those handles to appear, and I do have the transform button on in the graph editor, the position property selected with edit Value selected and reference graph deselected. For some reason I was able to do this once with the file from the book but thereafter I haven’t succeded in getting the handles to appear.

What is the temporal interpolation of the keyframe? Try mkaing it an ease KF then look for the handles.

Would it be possible to send you the project so you can decifer what I’m doing wrong? I’ve been stuck on this for a whole day now. I opened up the Total Training project that explains this and it works fine. But I just can’t seem to get it to work in my project. The project just has a blue solid layer with a circle mask shape. All I did was keyframe the solid position.

I had this too – you can solve it by clicking the button at the bottom of the panel called “Separate Dimensions”. This allows you to move keyframes from each dimension independantly in the value curves, and also will let you see the bezier handles so you can edit the curves themselves.
