  • Can’t find Apple ProRes Codec.

It seems like I’m the only one with this ridiculous problem, but I can’t seem to find the Apple ProRes codec in After Effects CS3 (on Windows XP).
(I have enabled Legacy Codecs through QuickTime, and I can see Sorenson and the other codecs.)

A couple of months ago the TIFF and TGA codecs for QuickTime was gone and I started to wonder if I just imagined that they used to be there, because no one at my work had them either. But after a clean install (after formating) I got them back!

Can anyone explain why codecs disapear and reapear like this?

Prores is an Apple-only codec and does not work on WinXP.

Also, on the Mac, it only works on machines that each have their own Final Cut Studio license on them.

Look towards SheerVideo codecs for similar functionality that will work cross-platform. (But Sheer is not a free codec, you must buy it.)

You can install this Pro Res decoder for Windows:

    https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleproresquicktimedecoder10forwindows.html

With this you’ll be able to read Pro Res files that were created on a MAC. You cannot, however, create a Pro Res file as this is only a decoder.

Too bad Apple don’t want to share the fun. Apple ProRes seemed like a natural way to go when choosing codec in the future, but I guess they didn’t want that.

Thanks for the fast answers and suggestions guys! I think I’ll look into Sheer instead.
