I’m trying to convert a video from .mov to .avi. I shot and edited the film for school, so I edited it in FCP7 in the school’s editing lab. Now I have the .mov file at home on my PC and wanna convert it to .avi, but when I export the file, all media players tell me they can’t open the file. Help a noob out.

    Hi Thomas,

What is the reason behind the conversion to .avi? This is not a good delivery format, files too large, used more for editing. What codec did you use? There are countless codecs available, and the computer must have the right codec installed for playback.

What is the source footage – SD, 720p, 1080? What is the destination/purpose?

    Thanks

    What Jeff said.

You should however be able to export to AVI with compression set to none. This is different from uncompressed AVI which is not supported by most most players.

But again, AVI is dead as a mainstream codec.

The only possible use I could think of these days, is exporting between applications as uncompressed, or for a request from a client who doesn’t know any better.
