  • can’t export a movie at 3840×1080

I’ve created a sequence in FCP6 that is 3840×1080 (essentially a double-wide 1080p clip). It plays fine within FCP. I’ve tried exporting it in any number of ways but every attempt produces a clip with missing or corrupt/quirky video and intact audio. I’ve tried:

    -exporting w/ QT conversion (PR422, H.264)
    -exporting QT
    -exporting with compressor

All produce a clip with the same problems.

I tried exporting an image sequence and the images come out fine. I then tried reimporting them as an image sequence into QT7 and I get the same corrupt-looking sequence.

Is there some way to successfully export a 3840×1080 clip?

    thanks!

FC do not support sizes bigger than 2K.
Try sending to Motion and export from there. It might work.

thx, that explains it. looks like FCPx can handle it though? perhaps I’ll finally give that a try.

ack, looks like FCPx can’t do a custom sequence size, is that right? There are more and larger options (up to 5k), but the ‘custom’ option doesn’t allow me to enter my own dimensions. Am I missing something?

There is an XML path from FCP 7 to Premiere where you might have a better chance to export a custom file. Not sure how reliable XML from FCP6 to PR is.

PR from what I have read is better at opening FCP legacy projects than using third party translators into FCPX.

    You are right.
FCPX is more standard centered than FC and doesn’t allows to work with custom sizes.
As Michael points, if you have access to PP you can try exporting an XML.
Also, if you have access to AE, you can try to send your sequence there with Automatic Duck or the Pop corn Island script.

Thanks. I’ll look at AE. Tried PPCS6 but it won’t export larger than 2k. My sequence on this can be made simple—I’m building a double-wide for multi-screen presentation and can just export the individual 1080p clips and then combine them in AE for 3840×1080 (if it works).

    No problem with the size.
