  • Can’t Click a Keyframe Precisely

Posted by Bret Snyder on January 5, 2010 at 2:27 am

I’m pretty frustrated here – but this should be an extremely simple question where I’m missing something small. Coming from 3ds max and AE, I’ve never seen a keyframing issue like this before.

As I edit keyframes, I click them first. However, when I click on a keyframe in the Effect Controls, it either places a new key on the left or right of the one I want to edit. Even if I zoom in ALL the way right on a keyframe, it STILL puts one on the left or right.

I can even click the frame I want to edit, make a change, and it makes a new damn keyframe right next to the one I’m trying to edit. It’s ridiculous – am I missing a weird setting somewhere? What’s Extremely odd is that I can only place the red marker on increments of milliseconds (which is logical), yet I’m able to place a keyframe BETWEEN milliseconds. This can’t be right…

In AE, I can clearly tell when I’m on a keyframe because it places the red line dead-center of the diamond. In Premiere, it is literally impossible to set the marker in the center of a keyframe diamond. No matter how precisely I’m clicking in the center of the diamond (even fully zoomed in), it always places the marker just a pinch to the left or right of the keyframe. Please help me before I punch a hole in my screen. 😛

    Hi Bret,
In video “Milliseconds’ is only used for Sync purposes.
When editing picture you work in a “frame” (fields) based time-base.
You can set Key-frames with a “frame” accuracy. The difference between frames in NTSC is 1/30 Seconds (33 Milliseconds). so a key frame will be separated from the adjacent at least 33 Milliseconds. You can not set a key-frame in-between. You can not displace a key-frame just “few milliseconds”.
Editing Audio is different . You can do “sub-frame” editing.

I stand corrected. I shouldn’t have said milliseconds. Why am I unable to edit keyframes by putting my [red line marker thingy] on top of said keyframe? This is what boggles me. After I have initially made a keyframe, the ONLY way I’ve been able to successfully re-edit that keyframe is by clicking the arrow buttons on the left hand side. I have yet to successfully place my [red line marker thingy] on top of a keyframe to edit it.

So, say I have 35 keyframes in a Write-On sequence for a cursive-style title. I should be able to select indidivual keyframes to edit them instead of clicking the right or left arrows [next keyframe] 25 times to get to the keyframe I want to edit.

    Am I making any sense?

I use the short-cut to navigate left or right from k-frame to K-frame.
    Open the “Buttons List”.
BTW, what are you trying to key-frame/

You have to be ON a keyframe before you can edit the values, otherwise you’ll make a new keyframe.

    I know. 😛

Again, the problem is that I’m unable to select keyframes. I can only select Frames. However, keyframes can be placed between frames, which is what happens 90% of the time I place keys.

So, say I place a keyframe somewhere in the Effect Controls. 2 minutes later, I want to edit that keyframe. I can NOT place the red marker ON the keyframe to select that particular one for editing. I’ll upload a short video later today to demonstrate what’s going on. I think I’m just not being understood here.

The above is a quick demo of what my problem is. In AE, I’m easily able to select the keys I want to edit. In Premiere, the only way I’m able to select keys is by using the Next Key buttons.

    Hi Brent,
In FC you don’t need to SELECT the key-frames, just park the play-head on that frame.
“Again, the problem is that I’m unable to select keyframes. I can only select Frames. However, keyframes can be placed between frames, which is what happens 90% of the time I place keys”.
    NO.
You can not put Key-frames “between frames”. Between frames there is nothing.
You don’t have to care if the play head is on top of the Key-frame, just make sure that the head is on the frame and change the values you need.

I know you don’t click keys to edit them. Here’s another video which may better demonstrate what I’m talking about. I’m re-editing keys that I previously made, and all of them function correctly except the last one. Changing the value of the last key makes a new key between 2 frames. Believe me – I KNOW this shouldn’t be happening, but you can clearly see it in the video. Once the fumbled key has been placed, it can no longer be editing using the playhead. The playhead will Not land on it as it’s not on a frame.

    Bret,
This is the “Final Cut Pro Forum”, nothing to do with Premier Pro.

Thanks. I assume you now understand the bug though. I’ll repost in the correct forum.
