    Hi there,
Have had a variety of problems with Premiere in the past, but this is a new one on me. I’m capturing from a Z1 camera to a MacBook pro to PPro CS4 which has previously been fine. Now premiere will only capture HDV footage. If I switch camera and premiere settings to DV then the message is ‘Can’t activate recorder.’

    Here’s what I’ve tried:
    – Checked camera settings and capture settings. Tried all possible combinations
    – Reinstalling premiere
    – TRashing prefs
    – Changing cables
    – Captures fine on another computer
    – Captures fine on laptop if I use Imovie

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sam

There is a different camera driver for HDV and DV. The camera has to be in the correct mode when you connect the firewire cable to the computer in order for the correct driver to load. To be sure the camera is in the right mode, I will frequently connect the cable while the camera is actually playing back the footage. Maybe that would work in your situation.

Thanks for the quick reply. I gave that a go and no difference. I”m really confused, I’ve been capturing fine for ages.

    Hi Sam,

In camera VTR menu settings, look for “VCR” and change from “AUTO” or “HDV” to “DV”. Close Premiere, and shut down camera. Turn camera on again, so PC recognizes as DV device, then start Premiere.

When you change settings to a hdv camera make sure you are not connected to the firewire. Premiere/windows will not see the changes.

Thanks for all the responses. Seems like that’s what it should be, but it’s not. I’ve tried every configuration, switching it to DV on the camera VTR settings whilst playing, switching modes and then reloading premiere. Firewire cable plugged in, not plugged in. Can’t figure it out.

Before changing modes on the camcorder from HDV to DV and vice versa you need to disconnect the firewire cable first, “caution” do not hot plug the cable, turn off the cam first or computer, hot plugging can result in blowing the cam port or computer port or both, In essence turn cam off, unplug, change mode, turn cam off, plug in, turn cam on.

Helpful information to know. Doesn’t change the capture situation unfortunately.
