Can;t add effects
I’m fairly new to FCP so I wondered if someone can help. I’ve created a sequence in FCP and then sent it into Color, this is the first time that I have used color. After adjusting contrast/color etc I have then sent it back to FCP. This to my amazement all worked fine. I get a “Sequence 1(from color)” which I open in the timeline, it plays back fine with the adjustments working… MY PROBLEM is I can’t add any effects between the clips? If i try and drag an effect down to the timeline it has a ‘X’ next to it, so when I release the mouse between 2 clips the effect doesn’t apply. Any ideas? Also on another sequence not sent to Color I can only apply effects between certain clips but not all, what would cause this? Thanks for your help.

In order for any transition to be applied you need to have enough media “handles” for the transition to use. Let’s pretend you want to apply a simple 1 second cross dissolve between two clips. With the razor tool count back 15 frames from the end of the outgoing clip. Make your cut and delete those 15 frames from the timeline. On the incoming clip do the same thing: delete the first 15 frames. Close the gap between the two clips. Apply the transition.

Thanks for the reply Don. Why have I not had to remove the frames before? Is it because it came in from Color? If I had added transition before sending to Color would they still be there when I send them back to FCP? I am on my laptop so can’t try what you said until the morning, hence the further questions. It just seems very time consuming to delete 15 frames off one and then 15 off the next move them back together and apply a transition. . . then repeat on all clips required. Will removing 30 frames then applying a transition not lose too much of the footage? As you can tell I am new to the editing process. Thanks again.

No, it’s probably because some of your clips already had enough media at the beginning and end of them that the applied transitions pulled enough frames from the master clips to cover the time needed to make the transition work.

Well that all depends on how the video is shot and editied. A good camera operator will realize that if there is a certain scene that’s important enough that it all needs to be present in the final product then they have to shoot enough footage before and after the shot to allow for editing, Transitions will always eat up some of your footage and the duration of the transition will always determine how much footage it needs.

Understand the ‘handles’ thing a bit more now. Thanks for that. Just one last thing, the sequence that came in from Color I can add NO transitions, ‘X’ between every set of clips, but the same sequence i.e the one that was sent to Color I can add transitions between some but not all clips, why is this? Exactly the same sequence but the Color corrected one allows no transitions.

Hi there – I have the exact same problem after sending to color. I get an x and I can’t add transitions. I rendered out my clip and cut it again so I could add cross dissolves between the edits, however, i can apply every transition except the cross disolve.
It was working before i sent the sequence to color.. so why not now, especially since i’ve rendered out and re-imported the whole file?
Any help would be greatly appreciate 🙂Thanks
