  • Can’t Activate Recorder…

I have tried editing the registry, upgrading the merits of the direct show filters, etc., etc. After a re-install, the capture might work for a few days, then it craps out again. I’m using both a Sony FX-1 and a JVC GR-72, and yes, the Sony is set O.K. I get machine control, just no signal visible in the capture window.

Currently, when using the Graph editor, however, it seems I can’t find anything under the ‘video capture’ section at all. Any ideas? And does anyone know what I should be seeing in the device manager as regards capture devices?

And I still can’t see HDV video in After Effects, either. I’ve been loyal to Adobe products for a long time, but this new version is really disappointing.

Don’t know if this will help or not…

The “Can’t activate recorder” error in PP 2.0 when trying to capture, is what I had to deal with until someone on the Adobe forum helped me find the answer. My problem was with an ADS Technologies A-to-D converter I had attached to my system. Adobe tried to use its filters (drivers) to capture, for some reason. I had to rename its drivers to solve the problem. There are a number of other devices which cause similar problems with 2.0 capture (“can’t activate recorder”), such as a Blackmagic card, Pinnacle hardware, et al.

To find the culprit, I had to download the graphedit app, and go through some checking. The important entry to look for in the GraphEdit filters list is “Video Capture Sources”, and not the DirectShow filters listings.

If you think this might help, follow the end of this thread to see the logic:

You may have to log in to the adobe site…not sure about this.

Thanks for your reply…What it seems to be is that I have a built-in USB camera that also uses the ksproxy.ax driver. However, even after disabling the little usb camera, and uninstalling the driver from its mitts, reinstalling the microsoft DV driver so it is under capture devices in the device manager and ksproxy.ax is still in my Windows/system32 folder…even after all that PPro 2 “can’t activate recorder…”.

When they charge as much as they do for ‘professional’ software, Adobe should make this a hell of a lot more bullet-proof than it is.

I can understand your frustration, as it took me several weeks finding my problem, including a number of times on the phone with Adobe. Finally, someone on the (Adobe) notes forum caught interest in my situation and solved the problem, as mentioned. My frustration was this: Why did you change the way you do DV handshaking from 1.5 to 2.0? My 1.5 version captured DV beautifully with the same camera, but 2.0 would not work with same camera, same port, same cable, etc. (I did not uninstall 1.5, and still have it). Made no sense to me. Even if you do change, you should be able to co-exist with other devices/drivers, because you did with 1.5. Oh well, that’s my vent…

Ed, did you have to pay for your phone calls to Adobe? Or did they actually treat the issue as a defect kind of situation? If you did get free support, what was your request ‘path’? Thanks for your continued interest, it’s nice to have someone respond!

Hi, i know you’ve started that thread for about a month before and i’m not sure if you were able to solve it by now. But anyway.

I just had the same problem and i was able to solve it by deinstalling some video playback software (like “video lanc” etc) i recently installed. Before installing them everything worked fine.

The problem can also depend on some video or audio codecs. It may help when you remove all unnecessary codecs (especially codec bundles)

Hope it can help anyone, greetings,
