Canopus?
Posted by Vegasarian on November 2, 2006 at 8:51 pmI have just had a client dump 6 VHS tapes on me for inclusion in his doc. (Its going to look great compared to the F900 footage that we shot the bulk of the doc on but I guess I can ‘sepia’ it or something). My problem is….I have no means of getting his VHS footage into Vegas. I must purchase something quickly. Canopus ADVC?. Does Canopus transfer smoothly?. i.e. no ‘jitter’ on camera moves or Audio/Video Sync problems?….. or is there something else?. I’d be very keen to hear from anyone who has successfully captured, rendered and burned VHS to Vegas and how?. The VHS’s are PAL. Many Thanks.

November 2, 2006 at 9:19 pmIf you have a camcorder with video pass thru just hook your VCR out to the A/V in on your camcorder and go firewire out of the camcorder to the computer. I’ve transferred lots of VHS tapes this way and always turns out fine. Your camcorder manual will usually tell you if you have the capability to do pass thru or not.

November 2, 2006 at 9:31 pmAs far as the Canopus products…they work great. I have been using the ACEDVio for three years now but mostly just for external monitoring. It will also do what you need to do but I usually just use my Sony handycam since it’s easy to hook up right on my desk. I just picked up another ACEDVio card on Ebay for $175…brand new opened box…and it works perfectly. All of the Sony digital camcorders I have had does have the pass thru function but the Panasonic PV-GS180 I just bought does not. I’m not sure why Panasonic left this feature out of their cameras since it’s such a handy feature to have.

November 3, 2006 at 12:03 amYou have to convert an analog signal to a digital ‘file.’
How you do that is straightforward:
1. Buy a card.
2. Buy a deck.
3. Buy a camera with ‘pass thru’ capability. As Ted has pointed out #3 might be the cheapest solution with the most benefit.

November 3, 2006 at 2:27 amBeen using my Canopus ADVC100 for years with absolutely no problems at all. That was the cheapest. However I understand now there’s a ADVC300 and 500. The 300 supposedly has a TBC Time Base Correcter to enhance old VHS tapes and is about $300 something. That’s the next one I’ll buy. And a 500 that’s around $1500 or so. The old 100 is now 110 I think.
I’d check them out.

November 4, 2006 at 8:03 pmSorry for late response I got Hi-jacked to another shoot and just got back.
Allen…can I ask, does….”Been using my Canopus ADVC100 for years with absolutely no problems at all”. Mean that the conversion is smooth(no jitter on moving camera shots, Pan/Tilt ) and absolutely no Audio/Video Sync problems?.
Raymond…Thank you for stating the obvious back to me. -

November 5, 2006 at 2:17 amHi Raymond
Sync problems was what originally lead me to the Canopus ADVC100. Now it’s an 110.Here’s an exerpt from their web site:
>Other converters can lose audio/video sync when converting longer segments >of video. ADVC110 supports locked audio when converting from analog to >digital, assuring perfect audio and video synchronization. ADVC110 also >allows conversion of analog audio signals only, when needed.
Visit the web site at;
https://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.phpYou may also want to take a look at the 300.
“”Mean that the conversion is smooth(no jitter on moving camera shots, Pan/Tilt)””
None that I see. However I only use my Canopus for analog captures; ie: VHS tapes or capture DVD from a portable DVD player. For capturing my DV tapes fropm my VX2000, I use my Sony GV-D100 editing walkman.
If you get it from VideoGuys.com maybe they even got a 30 day satisfaction return policy.

November 5, 2006 at 12:34 pmYou’ll love it. Many of us on this forum use Canopus products. Just make sure you read the manual. You may have to set the dip pin switches on the bak of the unit i they’re still there on the 110.
